Spare a thought for Hackney’s Labour group, which spent the summer marking the new Green administration’s first 100 days with a list of failings — among them not shouting loudly enough about the bus cuts. Those would be the cuts proposed by TfL, whose board is chaired by one Sadiq Khan. Labour’s own group leader in Hackney has since been reduced to writing to TfL asking it to explain its rationale and to state the new frequencies “definitively”. Marvellous.

Better yet, TfL chose this week to throw a tenth birthday party for the Hopper fare, which lets you change buses for free. Terribly convenient, given that scrapping the 254 and truncating the 42 means a good many Hackney passengers may be about to start doing exactly that.
