Community standards

Comments on the Hackney Citizen are a space for readers to discuss the borough, its politics and the issues that affect the people who live here. We want that discussion to be lively and open, and welcome disagreement — but it works best when everyone keeps it civil, relevant and within the law. The standards below exist to protect that, and we moderate with them in mind.

Keeping it lawful

We will remove comments that:

  • Contain potentially defamatory statements
  • Are in contempt of court
  • Risk breaching copyright law
  • Risk breaking UK law in any other way

Respecting other people

We will remove comments that:

  • Are abusive or disruptive
  • Are offensive
  • Contain someone’s personal details

Keeping discussion useful

We will remove comments that:

  • Are off-topic
  • Contain spam or advertise a product
  • Contain unsuitable links
  • We are unable to moderate (for example, because they are not in English)

Flagging a comment

If you see a comment you think breaches these standards, let us know at editor@hackneycitizen.co.uk and we’ll take a look. We make moderation decisions in good faith, and we won’t always agree with every request, but we read everything that’s flagged.

Publication in print

By posting a comment, you grant us permission to reproduce it, in whole or in part, in the print edition of the Hackney Citizen and across our other platforms. This is covered in our terms and conditions.

The Hackney Citizen does not take responsibility for comments posted by readers on this site. The views expressed in comments are those of their authors. The Hackney Citizen is operated by Citizen News & Media Limited — terms and conditions.
