Old Street’s Shoreditch Fire Station is giving people aged 14-17 the opportunity to take part in London Fire Brigade’s cadets programme.

The scheme trains young people in the skills necessary to progress in the fire service, and allows them to gain a nationally recognised BTEC Level 2 qualification in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community.

Those who wish to can also progress within their units and become officer cadets after their first year.

Fire cadets coordinator Simon Wright said: “If you are a young person who is up for a challenge, wants to be part of something new and exciting, someone who can learn new skills like problem-solving and working as a team, become a positive role model and achieve what you never thought possible, apply now.”

The hands-on classes see participants learn how to complete operational drills and successfully carry out a range of practices necessary to become a successful firefighter.

There is then a classroom session where cadets learn about the Fire and Rescue Service, the science of a fire, and more.

The cadets central team is also working to create a pathway into employment for young people; many graduates of the programme have joined the Fire Brigade as firefighters, control officers and non-operational fire and rescue service staff.

Vinny Jackson, who completed the programme in August, said: “Being a part of fire cadets has opened many doors for me and expanded my knowledge.

“Before I started, I was very shy and quiet but during my two-year journey my confidence has grown immensely. It helped me make good friends along the way, meeting some amazing people.

“All the skills I have picked up as a cadet will definitely help me with everyday life. I am very grateful for the opportunities it has given me and the memories I have made.”

Spencer Joseph, an officer cadet who has returned and progressed to leading fire cadet for the programme, said: “We meet every Monday evening at Shoreditch fire station for three hours, during which we undertake operational drills, using hoses and ladders.”

Cadets takes place once a week from 6-9pm for one academic year, and there are 16 places still available.
