London Fields cinema apologises for Kevin Spacey ‘oversight’

‘Oversight’: a poster featuring Kevin Spacey outside the cinema

A London Fields cinema has apologised for sticking a poster featuring disgraced actor Kevin Spacey on its wall – calling it an “oversight”.

The Institute of Light used an old promo for All the Money in the World – a film Spacey was wiped from at the last minute after allegations of sexual abuse against him emerged last year.

The resident who spotted the poster did not wish to be named, but said: “What baffles me is just the total lack of care.

“The poster was only put up very recently. I walk past the cinema most days and always have a look at what’s on, and this poster wasn’t up early last week.

“I was astounded when I saw it. It just seems incredibly thoughtless to use that image, given what Spacey is said to have done.”

In October 2017, actor Anthony Rapp came forward to say Spacey had made sexual advances towards him when he was just 14 years old.

A number of men have since accused the star of sexual harassment or assault.

Spacey was scratched out of Ridley Scott’s completed film All the Money in the World, with all his scenes reshot with Christopher Plummer.

Plummer, 88, this week became the oldest actor to be nominated for an Oscar for the role.

Spacey was also sacked from Netflix’s hit political drama House of Cards.

The Institute of Light, based in one of the London Fields railway arches, describes itself as a “one stop cultural hub” where visitors can “watch, eat, listen, read or enjoy a cocktail in the courtyard”.

Director Jo Hagan said: “Apologies for the oversight on our part regarding the poster. As a cultural institution we take seriously any allegation of abuse in any form so will be changing the imagery concerned.

“Please pass on our sincerest apologies to the member of public concerned.”

The Metropolitan police are currently investigating three allegations of sexual assault against Spacey, all of which are said to have taken place during his 11 years as artistic director at London’s Old Vic theatre.

The theatre revealed last year that it had received 20 individual accusations of inappropriate behaviour by Spacey.

The actor last released a statement in November through his now former spokesperson, who said the actor was “taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment”.
