Stoke Newington Farmers’ Market has this month relocated to the West Hackney Recreation Ground on Evering Road.

As Christmas nears, the market is expanding to make room for more festive wares, with extra stalls planned for craft producers selling textiles, knitwear, baby clothes, beauty products and ceramics.

Market manager, Kerry Rankine, said: “The West Hackney Recreation Ground is one of Hackney’s hidden green spaces – it’s a just few steps from the busy Stoke Newington High Street , but almost nobody knows about it.”

“It’s bigger than our usual site in front of St Paul’s so we’ll have room for extra stalls in the run-up to Christmas.”

The market, which is the only all-organic weekly farmers’ market in the UK, will have in stock all you need for a sustainable, seasonal feast with a range of local food from small organic farmers and producers.

Stocks Farm have organic turkeys and geese as well as hams, sausages, bacon, pies and pâtés – all of which can be ordered in advance for collection on Saturday 22 December, the last market day of the year. There’s organic veg too – and not just Brussels sprouts, but potatoes, parsnips, carrots, beets and greens.

For those preferring a less traditional spread, there’s a large range of wild and cultivated mushrooms, salads and cheeses on sale, as well as fresh and smoked sea fish caught off the Sussex coast.

Present buyers may also be interested in the cakes, chutneys, jams, cheeses and beers on display, or Sheila Poole’s mixed herb pots in unusual containers. As usual, market-goers can combat the bracing winter weather with a coffee and hot snack when they’ve finished shopping.

Stoke Newington Farmers’ Market will be at West Hackney Recreation Ground on Saturday 22 December, 10am-2.30pm.

The Market is closed 29 December, then reopens at its usual site in front of St Paul’s on Saturday 5 January 2012.
