More than 20 Hackney schools close early in heatwave

More than 20 Hackney schools have closed or are sending pupils home early this week after the Met Office issued an extreme heat warning for London.

Headteachers across the borough have shortened the school day or shut entirely to protect children and staff, with the changes affecting nurseries, primaries and secondaries from Monday 23 June.

A handful of schools are closed altogether on some or all of the affected days.

The decisions rest with individual headteachers, who weigh guidance from the Department for Education, the Health and Safety Executive, Public Health and the UK Health Security Agency before deciding whether to close or shorten the day.

Hackney Council said arrangements could change at short notice and urged parents to check directly with their child’s school. An up-to-date list is published on its Hackney Education website

Families have been advised to keep children hydrated and out of direct sun during the hot spell, and to contact their school before setting off.

Cabinet member for children, young people and early intervention Cllr Soraya Adejare said: “Although challenging for parents, particularly those that don’t have the option of working from home, schools that have decided to take this approach are putting the welfare of students and staff first, under extreme circumstances.

“Given that we have classrooms with maximum pupil numbers, schools that don’t have ventilation systems to accommodate these temperatures, and overstretched transport systems across the city, there is potential for any student or staff member – and especially those more vulnerable to excessive heat – to be adversely inpacted.

“This is the real impact of the climate crisis, that we are seeing in our day-to-day lives.”

Here are all 21 schools, grouped by what they are doing. All changes are due to the hot weather.

Gainsborough Primary School and its nurseries are also fully closed from Tuesday to Friday this week. Happy they are putting the welfare of children and staff first, but I hope Cllr Adejare also recognises that working from home isn’t an option when you have a baby or toddler who can’t attend their childcare setting.

The Garden School had to close early on 23 June and then caused for three more days in June. They then closed early Tuesday to Friday this week, Some of the most vulnerable young people attend the Garden School and families who live with some of be most intense hardships. Fans can’t be used in the school and a cooling system is urgent. I’m afraid being in power means that problems like this need a response not finger pointing between parents , schools and politicians.
