Winter Toy Appeal hopes for festive miracle so every child can have a merry Christmas

Organisers of the annual Winter Toy Appeal are hoping for a Christmas miracle as they issue an urgent plea for donations.

The big day is just weeks away, and with less than a fortnight before the donation window closes, members of the public are being asked to give away a new toy so children living in extreme hardship can have a special gift to open on 25 December.

The annual appeal is run by the Local Buyers Club and Location Location estate agency and is now in its 12th year. In that time, it has provided more than 37,000 toys to children in poverty.

Jenna Fansa, who co-founded the appeal with her husband, Basil, said: “While so many children are excitedly writing their letters to Santa, thousands in north and east London are experiencing high levels of deprivation and [are] unlikely to receive a gift. I’d urge everyone who can to help spread a little kindness this winter.

“This year, we’re working closely with Hackney and Haringey Councils to distribute the toys to children in most need. 64 per cent of children in Hackney and 52 per cent of children in Haringey live in income-deprived homes.

“The reality of that is parents going hungry so their children can eat and families living in cold, cramped conditions. This appeal is a way to come together as a community and ensure the festive magic extends to every child.

“With less than a fortnight to go, we urgently need more donations if we’re to reach every child referred to us.”

Last year, the toy appeal provided presents to more than 3,800 children. Organisers are hoping this year’s campaign will reach children not only in Hackney, but in Haringey, Tower Hamlets and Barnet.

The appeal aims to provide gifts to children of all ages up to 18, but presents for older children are in short supply.

To help, supporters can buy a new toy via the Winter Toy Appeal’s online wish lists or donate to a GoFundMe. Money raised will be used to purchase toys from independent stores in Hackney.
