◆ Rolling Stones mania swept through Hackney this month when the band arrived in the borough to announce its new album, Hackney Diamonds. The Citizen got a welcome plug, with US talk show host Jimmy Fallon posting a picture on Instagram of himself and Mick Jagger leafing through our August edition. Not to be outdone, the council’s Love Hackney Twitter account posted a Stones’ promo video, excitedly noting: “Love to see our tote bag featured!” One unimpressed account responded: “Hackney is a borough, not a brand.” Can’t get no satisfaction.
◆ A LinkedIn post this month encouraged people to “congratulate Angela Phillips for 123 years at Goldsmiths, University of London”. What a long and esteemed career the professor and former journalist has enjoyed. One can only imagine the excitement of her students, who can learn first-hand about the shaping of the modern press at the turn of the 20th century.
While this was taking place, only a few feet away the good people of the borough were sending their message to the Mayor.
