A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a seven-year-old girl died in north Hackney.

Police were called by Hatzola, the volunteer ambulance service and London Ambulance Service after the child died in north Hackney and took a 49-year-old man and a woman, aged 50, into custody.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of child neglect on Saturday (27 January 2023) and have since been bailed by police until April whilst investigations continue.

Police would not confirm the address where the child died beyond saying it was in N16, which includes Stamford Hill, Stoke Newington, Dalston and Cazenove.

Detectives are continuing their inquiries this week to find out what happened.

The Metropolitan Police sent a message to the community after the arrests.

A Hackney Council spokesperson said: “We were extremely saddened to hear about the death of the seven-year-old girl in Stamford Hill. However, it would be inappropriate to make any other comment at this stage while there is a police investigation underway.”

The  City and Hackney Safeguarding Children Board is likely to start a serious case review into the girl’s death and to look into the allegations of neglect.
