Hackney Youth Parliament is set to launch Young Hackney’s Black History Season this weekend.

The free celebration is open to all young people aged 13-19 who are living, studying or working in Hackney, or to those up to the age of 25 with a special educational need or disability.

The event runs from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday 22 October at Forest Road Youth Hub in Dalston and will feature talks by special guests, music, art, and free food.

Hackney’s Young Speaker Sudenaz Top said: “There will be many workshops and performances over the day, such as African drumming and art workshops for young people, with chances to win prizes and eat delicious Caribbean food.

“Alongside the fun workshops and performances, we also have very impressive speakers from creative industries and elite sports coming to speak to us – one of whom is Frederick Afrifa, an international sprinter who is a two time Olympic gold medalist. He was the London Schools Champion in 2011 and the World Youth Relay Champion in 2013.

“We can’t wait to see you there!”

The event is part of Hackney’s Black History Season, an extended version of Black History Month, traditionally celebrated in October.

The season is intended to recognise the strength, struggles and contributions of members of the Black community in Hackney, past and present.

It started on 1 October and will run until 8 December.

Hackney Youth Parliament is a group of elected members who advocate for positive change for young people in the borough as well as putting on regular events and consultations.

Those who are interested in attending the launch can sign up here.
