Hackney Council has announced plans to sell the Stamford Hill Clockhouse, urging businesses to come forward with new ideas for the building.

The block, located at 149 Stamford Hill, includes two floors of currently unused office space, previously occupied by the council’s housing teams, and has privately-owned homes above.

On 11 September, a proposal to sell the building was approved, and the council is urging organisations looking to use the space for the benefit of the local community to come forward.

Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville said: “We recognise the value this facility has had to residents in Stamford Hill and the north of the borough, but we also have a responsibility to ensure assets like this do not sit empty long-term – creating a financial burden on the council and an opportunity missed for our high streets.

“Stamford Hill is a growing town centre with a huge demand for space by community groups and businesses. We are therefore particularly keen to promote this opportunity to organisations with a presence in Stamford Hill and with ideas that could add to the town centre and benefit local residents.”

The council plans to begin marketing the sale of the building in the next few weeks.

The Town Hall’s other housing offices remain open in Homerton, Stoke Newington, De Beauvoir and Shoreditch, with other council offices dotted around the borough.
