Hackney’s much-loved Chatsworth Road is to host a free one-day festival this weekend in recognition of its market’s long history.

ChatsWORLD Summer Fair will run from 10am until 5pm on Sunday, with street food, shopping, kids’ entertainment, fairground rides and more on offer.

Music will also be provided by Hackney’s own Hoxton Radio.

Posting about the event on Facebook, Hackney Council wrote: “[ChatsWORLD is] a one-day festival celebrating everything we love about the market and Hackney.

“We’ll have many of our regular traders (with a few special additions) and a range of entertainment and activities for all ages.”

Chatsworth Road market usually runs from 11am until 4pm every Sunday, but operating hours have been extended for the festival.

In the market’s 1930s heyday, the street boasted up to 200 stalls selling their wares for four or five days of the week.

The market eventually closed in 1990 after a lengthy post-war period of decline. It was officially reinstated in 2010 after years of campaigning by residents, and aside from the pandemic, has operated weekly since June 2011.

In 2018, Hackney Council took over the running of the market, which now plays host to more than 50 traders each week, selling handmade items, gifts, street food and cupboard staples.

This Sunday’s festival is free to attend.
