A hotly anticipated UK debut from Taiwanese dance sensation

Cloud Gate 2, the sister company of the renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan make their highly anticipated UK debut with a thrilling triple bill of dance at Sadler’s Wells later this month.

Details and booking

Founded by Cloud Gate’s Artistic Director Lin Hwai-min, the company differ from most other junior companies as they do not perform work from their sister company’s repertoire, or prepare dancers for Cloud Gate. Instead, their focus is solely on showcasing the freshest and most original young dancers and dance-makers Taiwan has to offer. The result is some of the most expressive moves and ingenious choreography you are likely to see.

With dancers whose backgrounds that range from Tai-chi to ballet, this Triple Bill is packed with startling physicality and fluid, high energy movements. “Fast-paced, exciting and fluid” (Dance Europe) first piece of the evening Wicked Fish sees the dancers mimic a shoal of fish as they glide and wiggle in close-knit groups, set to a complex score.

Next up is The Wall, a powerful and highly energetic piece examining ideas of protection, segregation and the physical and mental barriers built around us. The final piece of the evening is the momentous and colourful Beckoning, where the innovative choreographer Cheng Tsung-lung looks at shifting identities using movements inspired by Taiwanese street-dancing rituals.

Side by side, these three dances perfectly exemplify the unique and courageous work this company are known. Here’s hoping this debut is followed by many more performances to come.
