Police and firefighters have closed off part of a major road in Hackney amid fears a building might collapse.

The junction between Mare Street and Well Street was cordoned off at around midday.

Witnesses said the ceiling of Karmelek, a Polish deli in Well Street, fell in and that the emergency services were trying to make sure the building was still structurally sound.

Diversions are in place for motorists and police officers are directing people away from the immediate vicinity of the shop, which is located on a parade of businesses near Lidl.

Around a dozen firefighters can currently be seen entering the building.

Update – 3.32pm: The cordoned off part of Well Street, and the junction between Mare Street and Well Street, has now been reopened.
