Town Hall evacuated and Mare Street partially closed after explosion

Deserted: Part of Mare Street was cordoned off this morning

Police and fire service personnel cordoned off part of Mare Street and adjoining roads and the Town Hall was evacuated after an explosion.

A Hackney Council spokesperson said: “Part of Mare Street is currently closed due to an electrical explosion.

“Nobody was injured, the police and the council are dealing with the incident.”

Shortly before 12noon the council tweeted footage showing smoke outside the library.

There are currently diversions in place for motorists.
