Connected: AOL staff helped Hackney deaf children on ‘Monster Help Day’

Deaf children and their families were guests at a tea party last Saturday to raise awareness about deafness and tackle anti-social behaviour.

The Queen’s Tea Party took place on the Wilton Estate on Greenwood Road, and saw members of the Hackney Deaf Children’s Society (HDCS) and residents socialise and share personal experiences.

The HDCS, run by a group of local parents, works with health and educational professionals to provide deaf children with the support they need.

Hackney does not currently provide local school provision for deaf children, so families have to venture outside the borough.

Staff from global media firm AOL helped to organise the tea party, as part of the company’s seventh annual Monster Help Day.

The company-wide volunteer day is now in its seventh year. This year saw 150 volunteer projects launched across 47 cities around the world with volunteering taking place in Tottenham, Haringey and elsewhere.

Other charities involved included Help Refugees, the Anthony Nolan Trust and the Selby Centre.
