Haggerston pool: What’s in store for the historic Bath house?

The future of Haggerston Baths should be decided in public, say campaigners seeking to resurrect the historic Haggerston swimming pool.

Campaign group Save Haggerston Pool is calling on Mayor Jules Pipe to publish details of the plans that have now been put forward by a number of developers.

The group says the ten bids should be open to “public perusal” and debate so that local residents can have a say in what happens to the disused site.

Mike Coysh, chair of the Haggerston Pool Campaign said: “I’d like to see the proposals presented to the public so the community can be be included in the decision-making process.”

Three of the proposals for the Grade-II listed bathhouse include plans for a swimming pool, but only two of them would be in the original hall.

Mr Coysh said having a swimming pool is important for the community.

“Many generations have used the Haggerston pool and remember it with fondness.

“We urge the Council to ensure that a pool is included in the proposal they choose, as this is what local people have clearly said they would like to see, both at the public meeting, and through the public survey,” he said.

The shortlisting and selection process is yet to be announced.

A spokesperson for Hackney Council said: “We have received 10 formal bids and we are currently assessing each of these in turn.

“We will begin shortlisting the proposals in the coming weeks. Whilst this remains ongoing we cannot comment on any likely uses or next steps.”
