Cleared: Hackney landlord Haydar Ulus

A Hackney landlord and Enfield councillor has been cleared of assaulting a 54 year-old man.

Haydar Ulus, 34, was accused of punching the man in a cash and carry in Edmonton in February 2014.

Mr Ulus pleaded not guilty to the charges, arguing that he was acting in self defence.

A jury of eight men and four women pronounced him not guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Mr Ulus is the landlord of 411 Mare Street, the former home of Hackney Heart community cafe, and a member of the Alevi Cultural Centre in Dalston.

Previously a Labour councillor, Mr Ulus was suspended from the Labour Party while court proceedings were active and is currently an independent councillor for Haselbury Ward.

Mr Ulus has been approached for comment.
