Police attacked by masked revellers at Stamford Hill party

Police were attacked by 400 masked revellers on the weekend when they were called to a party that had spiralled out of control.

Metropolitan Police officers arrived at Sandford Court on Bethune Road just before midnight on Saturday night, following noise complaints form neighbours.

According to a police statement, shortly after the officers arrived they came under a sustained attack with bottles, bricks and other items thrown at them from balconies.

The party-goers also pushed bins towards police vehicles and several fights broke out as the party spilled onto the streets.

Riot police and a police helicopter attended but the crowds were not dispersed until 2am.

No-one was injured during the incident but police said one member of the public was treated for breathing difficulties.

Detective Chief Inspector Cath Edginton, from Hackney borough, said: “A number of residents had contacted police to complain about the noise levels at the party and it was for this reason that officers attended.

“To be confronted by hundreds of people and attacked in this way is wholly unacceptable. It is fortunate that none of my officers were injured.”

“I would also like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who witnessed the events or has information about the people responsible to contact the police.”

No arrests were made but enquiries continue.
