NBH pupils thrive in small classes within a beautiful Grade II listed building

From the Early Years of education through to A-Level study, North Bridge House (NBH) adopts a nurturing approach to develop happy, confident and academically successful children across each of its five campuses.

Jonathan Taylor, Head Teacher of Islington’s first Independent Senior School, North Bridge House Senior School & Sixth Form Canonbury says: “External exam grades are undeniably important but are only one aspect of a successful and
high-achieving education.”

The fifth addition to the group’s portfolio marked a new era for North Bridge House when it opened in September 2014, extending the school’s academic offering to A-Level, preparing them for entry into the
top universities.

Inspiring surroundings

The Grade II listed building in which the school is set is the ideal home for the school’s vibrant and character-building ethos, with beautiful surroundings and historical context offset by state-of-the-art
learning facilities.

The newly renovated King Edward’s Hall next to the main school building is the perfect space for everything from theatre productions to weekly Pilates sessions.

Whilst this environment facilitates the school’s commitment to providing a unique learning experience that takes pupils beyond the classroom itself, Jonathan believes it is the outstanding teaching, small class sizes and personal attention that students receive that both inspires and challenges them to fulfil their potential.

He says: “NBH Canonbury really is a place worth a visit, where prospective students and their families can meet our highly qualified and motivational teachers first-hand, and gain a far more tangible insight into our vibrant and enthusiastic community.”

Jonathan joined the team last year as Head Teacher of the new school, which offers 13 to 18 year olds a unique schooling experience in the heart of North London.

He has a degree in History and Politics, as well as both a PGCE and an MSc in Educational Leadership.

With experience as a head teacher, A-level teacher, head of social sciences and director of sixth forms across a range of UK and international schools, Jonathan has a wealth of experience in preparing young adults for university and beyond, and a clear vision for North Bridge House Canonbury.

James Stenning, Assistant Head at NBH Canonbury says:  “We want our students to be fully prepared for the world of work and life beyond North Bridge House by the time they leave in Year 13.”

“Besides preparing pupils for public examinations, they are encouraged to immerse themselves in our extra-curricular and
enrichment programme.

“The skills gained, friendships fostered and confidence built in these activities can really enhance a pupil’s performance in the classroom.”

‘Rounded and complete’ education

Jonathan says: “Our academic, pastoral, and extra-curricular provisions are not separate concepts but equally important elements of a fully rounded and
complete education.”

Like all schools within the North Bridge House group, NBH Canonbury provides students with a whole range of opportunities.  Just last term, Canonbury students took part in activities such as: scaling the heights of the challenging walls at the local climbing centre; gracing the board room of Grant Thornton, where students involved in the Young Enterprise scheme pitched their business ideas; and studying a non-European language – learning Mandarin on Tuesday lunchtimes.

Nadia Whittaker, a parent at NBH Canonbury confirms: “My daughter has benefited immensely from the enthusiasm of the teachers, the atmosphere of mutual respect and a commitment to developing
students’ talents.”

Mr Ramzan, another parent, reiterates that “the school’s ethos and enrichment programme have had the added benefit of our children enjoying going to school and we have seen them really improve academically this year.”
