Hackney Council suspends demolition of Dalston Lane’s historic terrace

One of the Georgian era homes set to be demolished under the council’s plan
Hackney Council has suspended its demolition of an historic Georgian terrace following complaints from conservation group OPEN Dalston.
The Town Hall has submitted a new application to knock down the buildings after its lawyers concluded its structural survey was insufficient.
The terrace is thought to date from 1807 and the council wants to replace it with ‘heritage likenesses’.

As I understand it all that can be stopped at this point is the loss of the facades of the shops, the point they can be entirely saved is long since passed. I think hanging on to the relatively ordinary front wall of these buildings is likely to be extremely expensive and slow, Itll keep this area looking an eyesore for years. No solution has been put forward to counter the fate murphy propose, and certainly theres been no financial viability explored in the alternative. Is it responsible to simply moan about attempts to clear this mess up? I support demolition of the front if thats all thats at stake BUT in an ideal world I would try to negotiate with murphy to keep a lesser number of the originals alongside their “frankensteins” and keep them entirely, I’d suppose the two buildings at the ends of the terrace would make most sense. I would suggest the original interior features documented on spitalfields life site are brought together in those buidlings and reused to recreate the original interiors faithfully and eventually those shops are let at preferential rent to business’ whose first concern is THE BUILDING and a non invasive approach to being there. Then..we’d have something to compare to the facsimilies and hopefully be able to agree “you see how much BETTER that is??” so that in future people could see what was lost and not let it happen again.
