Choral group The Hackney Singers are celebrating their 40th anniversary on 5 October at St Mary’s Church in Stoke Newington.

Led by acclaimed Irish conductor Mark Shanahan, the 150-strong choir will be presenting an evening of “enchanting Victorian music”, including Bruckner’s Motets and Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, accompanied by organist Andrew Storey and a brass ensemble.

Unlike many other choirs, the group does not hold auditions and states that everyone is welcome to join their Thursday night rehearsals.

The group perform two concerts every year, and 80 members were part of the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Paralympics, performing a specially commissioned piece which they say was “a particular highlight”.

The Hackney Singers will be performing at 7.30pm on Saturday 5 October, St Marys Church, Church Street, N16 9ES

Tickets cost £12
