Child-friendly flicks set for Dalston Square screenings

Dalston Children's Festival

A family affair: workshops give parents and children chance to get to grips with film

As part of the Dalston Children’s Festival, over the two weekends of the half-term holiday – Saturday 25 May and Saturday 1 June – Lost Picture Show will be running film workshops from 2-5pm in Dalston Square.

Both workshops are for children and families in Hackney as part of the festival, and the first workshop will be an opportunity to get your hands on film. Literally.

Inspired by avant-garde film-maker Len Lye, those participating will be asked to engage with 16mm celluloid film, drawing, scratching and painting directly onto it.

Jim, the director of the project, said that he wants people to use the film photographically, “so everyone gets given a strip of film and they can do whatever they want with it”.

The results of the afternoon workshops will be projected in the evening before feature films, picked by kids from, are shown.

Other feature films will also be shown on 31 May, entirely free in the Square, and if you want to find about the free film programme, see facebook.com/groups/dalstonsquarecinema/. The second workshop on Saturday 1 June is to be confirmed, but if it’s half as good as getting to play about with film and seeing your work shown in the evening then it’s sure to be fun.
