A 19 year-old man was shot dead on Saturday night (16 February) whilst sitting in a parked car in Clapton.

The police have confirmed that the deceased is Joseph Burke-Monerville from Canonbury, Islington.

Two other men were in the car with Burke-Monerville, one of whom is a 22 year-old who is currently in a critical but stable condition, whilst the other managed to escape injury.

Police were called to the scene in Hindrey Road, E5 at 8.20pm on Saturday.

The two injured men were taken to hospital by ambulance but Joseph died later at around 11.10pm.

Joseph was a student at the London Metropolitan University where he had started a Forensic Science degree last September.

He leaves behind a devastated family who are trying to come to terms with this pointless killing that seems to have been a case of Joseph being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

His friend, Timothy Timi-Kehinde Gbadeyan said on Facebook: “I always hear about gun crimes, never thought my brother will ever be a victim RIP.”

Whilst his twin brother, Jay Bee Monerville said on Facebook: “Devastating, 19yr old TWIN brother gone and 32yr old BIG brother crying and blaming himself for what he couldn’t change! Don’t know my mood at all.”

Two suspects were seen running away from the crime scene towards the nearby Pembury Estate.

The first man is said to be black and the other man is light skinned, possibly of Asian or Turkish origin.

Trident is heading up the police investigation and an incident room has opened at Hendon under Detective Chief Inspector Kenny McDonald, who is appealing for witnesses.

DCI McDonald said: “Our early inquiries suggest that Joseph and those he was in the car with have no links to gangs. We continue to work to try and establish the motive for this murder.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting and may have seen the incident, or two males fleeing the scene, to contact officers.”

A post-mortem confirmed that Mr Burke-Monerville died of a gunshot wound to his head.

As yet there have been no arrests.
