Between the Lines film fest to explore changing media boundaries

A weekend festival of film and debate at Rich Mix Cinema will investigate the dramatically shifting boundaries in today’s new media landscape.

The Between the Lines festival, from 1-3 March, will explore the challenges facing documentary makers, investigative journalists and citizen reporters, in the converging digital world.

The in-depth programme of films and discussion will look closely at the issues and opportunities raised by the internet, trans-media and merging documentary conventions.

Bringing together key players from across recent and traditional media disciplines, the festival will be asking why documentary makers are increasingly becoming investigative reporters, who controls the news and how corporate or charitable sponsorship influences filmmakers.

During the weekend there will be screenings of the Ken Burns documentary The Central Park Five, Jessica Wu’s Last Call at the Oasis, the documentary film We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists by Brian Knappenberger and The Ambassador by Danish filmmaker Mads Brügger.

Speakers and panelists will include William Uricchio, the founder and principal investigator of the MIT Open Documentary Lab; Kevin Macdonald., an Oscar and BAFTA-winning documentary filmmaker; Gavin MacFadyen, the director of the Centre for Investigative Journalism; and Emily Bell, director of the Tow Centre for Journalism at Columbia University.

Between the Lines, organised by DocHouse and The Frontline Club, will be held from 1-3 March at Rich Mix Cinema, Shoreditch, with tickets available to purchase through the Rich Mix website, www.richmix.org.uk, or at www.betweenthelinesfest.com.
