Rich pickings at Rich Mix

From Cable Street to Brick Lane – World Premiere trailer from Hazuan Hashim and Phil Maxwell on Vimeo.

Over the next three months, Rich Mix is hosting a season of independent film celebrating key dates and anniversaries through one-off screenings.

The venue is collaborating with film organisations DocHouse, Limelight Film Nights, The Cabinet of Living Cinema (Making Tracks) and Dash Arts on a line up of films, documentaries and short films, which culminates in March with a three-day festival of screenings and discussions exploring the changing landscape in documentary, reporting, broadcast and new media.

Highlights of the programme this month include a free screening of Hazuan Hashim and Phil Maxwell’s feature length documentary From Cable Street to Brick Lane to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday 27 January. The film explores how different communities came together in the 1930s, 1970s and 1990s to challenge racism and intolerance by focusing on two iconic East London streets.

Televising the Revolution on Wednesday 30 January explores the role of film and video in the Egyptian uprising and overthrowing of Hosni Mubarak as we approach its second anniversary. The free event includes short films from Egypt and first-hand accounts by the filmmakers.

The music theme continues on Saturday 19 January with a DocHouse masterclass on documentary sound recording, in which eminent documentary makers such as Larry Sider (The School of Sound), Mary Milton (Rough Aunties, Sisters in Law) and Peter Albrechtsen (The Queen of Versailles, Putin’s Kiss) discuss their work, style and practice in a series of in-depth master classes. Day tickets are on sale for £40.
