Police call time on three Hackney pubs

Three Hackney pubs have been closed in the wake of a series of police investigations.

The Kingsland and the Brewery Tap on Kingsland Road, and the Yucatan Pub on Stoke Newington High Streethave all been subject to closure orders.

The Kingsland has been closed for 28 days after a drugs warrant was executed by officers on the property. One man was arrested with possession with intent to supply cannabis.

Following a police campaign targeting pubs selling to underage patrons, the Yucatan and the Brewery Tap will be closed from 26 October to 5 November as a formal sanction in lieu of prosecution.

Inspector Ian Simpkins of Hackney Police’s Licensing Unit said:  “My team is committed to ensuring that people on a night out in Hackney can enjoy themselves in the knowledge that the venue where they are socialising is not engaged in criminality or a breach of its licensing conditions.

“Dalston is an increasingly popular venue for a night out and we want to ensure that it stays safe for everybody.”

Word to Hackney Council and Met Police; drug deals and drug taking go down in just about every pub and club in the borough, not just the “a little ragged at the edges” pubs.

The trendy venues that cater to young professionals are hot spots too.

@Duchess of Hackney, have you witnessed this?

I have, at 2 places in the borough and I’ve been reliably informed about other places, besides it’s a given these things go on.

I don’t know the people involved and I doubt the management have an inkling that it goes on and if they do, probably turn a blind eye if it’s discrete.

These other places that the police and Hackney shut down are easy targets and we know why.

Illegal rat meat sold over the counter just up the road from the pubs, are the police or authorities going to shut those traders down?

For goodnes sake; all these comments are adverse snobbery at the highest level.

I’m sure if these pubs were shut down and re-opened as ‘gasto pubs’ you would all be down there plotting your next ‘conquest’- ridiculous.

Pat, the thing about “bush meats” is that although it is illegal in this country, back in the Motherland they are considered delicacies by some.

The rat you speak of is not your garden variety you find running around your home. These ones can be the size of a small cat and are found in the wilds, hence the term ‘bush meat’. It is then smoke cured and left to dry. I’ve never had rat but have tried other types…not in the UK, but in the Motherland when I was a wee lass.

duchess, you use the word illegal which is my point. And I agree with dalston lad, this exercise seems to have been about the type of establishment not what was going on inside. One man arrested with cannabis, that should should help the crime stats.
