Sainsbury’s revised plan stokes fears

A group set up to campaign against controversial proposals to open a new Sainsbury’s superstore in the heart of Stoke Newington has called on residents to write to Hackney Council objecting to the scheme.
The Town Hall is carrying out a consultation and has pushed back the date by which residents’ responses should be submitted following a revised application by developers Newmark Properties.
There was highly publicised criticism of the original plans for the store, which would overlook Abney Park Cemetery.
Newmark subsequently put in a fresh application for a smaller development, which would also include housing.
Campaign group Stokey Local says it fears ‘overdevelopment’ in the area.
Residents have until 16 September to make their voices heard. The consultation can be found on the council’s website.
Must say that visiting the newish Sainsbury’s Local on Mare Street, I was impressed with the prices and quality of the products compared with my local Londis (which seems rather over-priced in comparison).
@Howard – nice to visit maybe and good for somethings but… prices can be up to 40% higher on certain things available in other local stores, 10% higher than bigger Sainsbury’s. I strongly oppose these “small” stores as they kill local stores often after life savings and years have been given to building businesses.
Also as there is no delivery access we endure engines left running from their lorries hours a day with huge disruption, noise, smells etc and rude behaviour from drivers. If there is no parking for deliveries they should not be allowed and an economic assessment of impact should always be demanded of these big national and multi-national “local” stores.

“Write to council”?I thought stoke newington was the council.
“Campaign group Stokey Local says it fears ‘overdevelopment’ in the area.”
Can’t have any overdevelopment of Stoke Newington, can we? That’s only suitable for other, poorer parts of the borough…
