Murcof & Simon Geilfus live

This year Alpha-ville has announced that although it won’t be running its usual festival, there will be a programme of individual events.

This may be an event on a much smaller scale but it certainly won’t be lacking in ambition, Alpha-ville returns with its signature mix of technology and art to challenge the senses.

Making the most of two iconic arts venues, with Alpha-Ville LIVE taking place at the Hackney Empire and Alpha-Ville Screening at the Hackney Picturehouse, this year’s festival will prove that despite funding cuts creativity and innovation can still flourish in east London.

The LIVE event will explore the relationship between electronic music, visual performance and other cultural practices. With its unique programme, highlights will include AntiVJ and the London premiere of a collaboration between Murcof & Simon Geilfus.

AntiVJ are a visual label with a focus on exploring the use of projected light and its influence on perception.

AntiVJ present live performances and installations which challenge the senses through a mix of stereoscopy, holographic illusions and projection mapping (a means of sculpting video content to match the surface geometry).

For Alpha-ville the audio-visual show will create an immersive experience, mutating the surrounding environment.

The day will also feature a solo performance from German techno pioneer, The Field, and a live-set from the founder of German label Raster-Norton, Byetone.

With hypnotic visuals, light effects and real-time visualisations these sets become complex works of art, creating soundscapes which have the power to take the listener momentarily outside of the physical world.

Just across the street, the Picturehouse will host cutting edge new innovations in moving image including animation, video art, experimental video and documentary, with special picks including Sundance film festival selection Kangmin Kim’s 38-39°C and Jeff Desom’s Rear Window Timelapse.

Alpha-ville will also present the Future of Moving Image Award in partnership with Little White Lies and Shooting People. The award is dedicated to acknowledging the best talent pushing the boundaries of moving image as a tool for creative expression, innovation and forward thinking.

A distinguished panel of judges has been gathered together including VP of Creative Development at Vimeo, Blake Whiteman and the Director of the London Short Film Festival, Philip Ilson.

This certainly won’t be the last we see from Alpha-ville.
