There is some calm now on Hackney’s streets. The riots have stopped making national headline news and the watching world has found interests elsewhere.

People are now dealing with the aftermath indoors. Those who are said to be angry are channelling it somewhere else – for now.

Many are contributing to the big pot of questions and answers about why the riots took place.

One young Hackney teacher who spoke to the Citizen on condition of anonymity says she and her colleagues have been dealing with the build-up to the riots in their classrooms every day for the last year: there is little surprise that it happened, only that it happened on the scale it did.

In the interview (above) she talks about how some of her students see things, and points to the pressures of ‘gang culture’ that affect their day-to day reality and future.

She is concerned for her students and gives some pointers to the causes of the problems that led to the recent disturbances.
