Melissa Houghton from Stoke Newington abseiled 500 feet from London’s tallest abseil-able building, Guy’s Hospital Tower, last Saturday (14 May) to raise money for St Mungo’s homelessness charity.

St Mungo’s helps homeless people by running frontline emergency services, supporting homeless people in their recovery, and working to prevent homelessness. Established in 1969, St Mungo’s runs over 100 projects and helps thousands of people make life changes every year.

Melissa says: “I decided to fundraise for St Mungo’s because they have done a lot for me and I thought it would be fun – and I was born in St Guy’s Hospital along with my twin sister.”

At nearly 500 feet high, the Guy’s Hospital Tower abseil is probably the biggest public abseil that you are likely to be able to do. It is also one of the last chances to do the iconic challenge as Guy’s undergoes renovation work in June putting the building out of action for at least two years.

Tanya English, Executive Director for Fundraising and Communications, said: “We are enormously grateful to all our fundraisers who took the plunge in St Mungo’s abseil.

Their time and energy can help us continue to support homeless men and women as they get their lives back on track. Last year our skills and employment teams supported 1005 people in to employment, training, further education and activities, and we helped 703 residents make positive accommodation moves.”

“This work is significantly aided by generous donations from our donors and supporters.”
