Literary April

Independent bookshop, Pages of Hackney

Pages of Hackney has had a cracking run of events in the past few months, including a wonderful presentation/workshop from local knitter Jenny Lord, who directed a live knitting session from her book Purls of Wisdom and more recently the wonderful Simon Garfield came in to talk about his book Just My Type, revealing the history and meaning behind different letter fonts to a captivated sold-out audience.

Next up on Tuesday 5 April we have a talk on a new book, Estate, by Fugitive Images. Estate considers the successes and failures of public housing during a decade that has favoured entrepreneurial charities or a subsidised private sector over state-funded and administered housing. The starting point is a visual essay on the Haggerston West & Kingsland estates in Hackney, in the process of demolition and re-building. The 56 photographs document the spaces left behind when people were moved out.

On Wednesday 20 April we have Michael Foley coming in to talk about his book The Age of Absurdity, a wry and accessible investigation into how the desirable states of wellbeing and satisfaction are constantly undermined by modern life. Described as “absurdly readable” by the Guardian’s Phil Hogan, this looks to be a fascinating insight into how the modern Western world deepens our cravings while simultaneously heightening our delusions of importance as individuals.

All events start at 7pm and are in Pages basement gallery space.

Tickets cost £3.
