Locals to open boutique hotel on Dalston Lane

A local family plans to launch a boutique hotel near Dalston Junction at the end of this month.
The Avo Hotel, located at 82 Dalston Lane, will be run by the Kotecha family who are known in the community through their work in the local post office.
Having lived and worked in Dalston for over 20 years, the family were keen to provide good quality accommodation in time for the Olympics.
One of the family members is PR and brand manager Dr Sunny Karir, who said “You can tell it really is a family project. My dad was born and brought up in a hotel and it’s always been his dream to have his own place. My background is in event management and promotions, my mother’s is in decor and my brother’s in finance.”
The hotel will consist of five rooms and a studio, all ensuite, with iPod docks, memory-foam mattresses, flat-screen TVs and a book and film library for guests to choose from.
The owners aim to keep a connection with their neighbourhood by showing the work of Dalston photographers around the hotel, and by seeking local food and drink suppliers for the lobby café.
Rooms will be available from £79 when the hotel opens later this month.
in that case count your change before you leave as mistakes cannot be rectified later…
It’s true they ran a newsagents on that site for 20 years, but they’ve never been local (not been a Post Office for years). Mr Kotecha and his family have always lived in Ilford if I recall correctly.
I wish them the best of luck with it but I wish they’d been able to keep the newsagent open instead.
Hey guys, just so you know, we moved to Dalston when I was 10 years old (1990). We used to live on top of the shop with my cat who prowled the rooftops 😉 My parents moved to Ilford only a couple of years ago. For me, Dalston’s always been my home-town. Would have loved to keep the shop open but we were losing money every day to the Costcutter… Hope to see you at the hotel, Sunny 🙂
Congratulations to the Kotecha family for building this particular business and staying committed in Hackney after 20 years. Their forethought is to be commended and their chutzpah celebrated. They have adapted in an exciting way to the new populations moving into our borough. I hope that their lead will be followed by other Hackneyites and I wish them the best of luck.
