Winners honoured at Hackney Youth Sports Awards 2010

The borough’s young sports men and women were honoured at the Hackney Youth Sports Awards 2010 on Wednesday 3 November at the Hackney Empire.

Comedian Kat B compered the night whilst British Olympic bronze medalist Natasha Danvers and Paralympic swimmer, Dervis Konuralp presented some of the awards.

Now in their fifth year, the awards recognise the achievements of  those who have participated at local, county or national levels in various events over the past year. There were also awards for volunteering, services to sport and for coach of the year.

Shaun Purcell, Head of PE at Cardinal Pole School, and winners of Schools Participation Award said: “Once again, some of the achievements were great from kids across a range of activities and schools. I was particularly happy that Cardinal Pole managed to win the school challenge award again due to the fantastic efforts of our pupils getting involved in a range of sports.”

Brenda Sullivan who won the Career Achievement Award said: “It’s a great opportunity to show off all the excellent sporting talent amongst our youngsters today. It was a fantastic opportunity to recognise all the good work done in sport in Hackney.”

Hackney Council’s cabinet member for community services, Councillor Jonathan McShane said: “Well done to all this years winners. I look forward to seeing some of them succeed in future years, maybe even as Olympic medal champions! Sport can be enjoyable and give you a sense of achievement as well as helping you stay fit and healthy. There are lots of opportunities in Hackney to get involved in sport either at school or at your local leisure centre.”

This year’s winners are:

Outstanding Contribution to the London Youth Games: Fe Keown.
She developed her own club’s opportunities but also a team who represented Hackney in the London Youth Games.

Outstanding Contribution Team Contribution to the London Youth Games: Hackney Boys’ Football Team.
It finished in the top three at the London Youth Games: a first for over twenty years.

The London Youth Games Challenge Award: Cardinal Pole Secondary School. had the greatest participation in the London Youth Games 2010

Primary Schools Participation Award: Jubilee Primary School.
It attended the most School Sports Partnership events and competitions in 2009/10 and had the most representation at a regional and national level.

The Young Leaders Award: Eniola Adelin, Wackesha Alexander, Roxanne Hinds, Yolanda Lear.

Career Achievement Award: Brenda Sullivan.
She has worked not only for her own primary school, Holmleigh, but also in support of school sport across Hackney providing guidance, support and a helping hand to those who need it.

Young Volunteer Award  – Siobhan Forde.
She has worked with local primary schools to set up schools competitions with her PE department. She helps provide sport at Hackney Free School, and has achieved her Sports Leaders Award along the way. She also has Head Girl responsibilities and is a Hackney Olympic Youth Ambassador.

Inclusion Award, sponsored by GLL: Jill Danskin.
For her work both paid and voluntary throughout the borough in disability athletics and for her commitment to the whole wellbeing of young people in her care.

Under 11 Team of The Year: The Hackney Mini Tennis Team.
It finished first in East London and fourth in London at the Mini Games Tennis Competitions.

The Under 18 Team of The Year: Hackney Community College Boys’ Basketball Team.
It won the National League Title.

Coach of the Year: George Manners, Cardinal Pole Weightlifting Club.
His team has won silverware at the National schools and the National under 18 championships and finished first at the the London Youth Games.

The Personal Best Awards:

Hackney Personal Best Healthy School Award: Our Lady St Josephs
Personal Best Healthy School Award: Whitmore Primary School

The Mayor’s Award for Services to Sport in Hackney: Phil Hayfield.
For the development and ongoing support of the Hackney Girls’ Basketball Club and the support of individuals from grassroots to International standard.

The under 13 Sports Person of the Year: Lucas Taylor.
He is currently ranked first nationally for tennis in the under 13s age group and plays for Hackney City Tennis Club.

The under 21 Sports Person of the Year: Alex Peters.
He is a member of the winning London Youth Games Cycling Team and is currently ranked second on the road and fourth on the mountain bike in the country at his age group.
