Local entrepreneurs and business people now have until Friday 23 July to enter the Mayor of Hackney’s Business Awards.

Now in their fifth year, the annual awards celebrate and champion the diversity and excellence of small and medium sized businesses in Hackney. This is reflected this year in the creation of brand new categories including Best Leisure or Entertainment Business and Best Business for Disabled People.

Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, said: “A lot has changed in the past five years and I realise that businesses have faced very difficult times. However, what remains constant is the place small and medium sized businesses occupy at the heart of Hackney’s local economy. That’s why I’m committed to supporting and showcasing the best of the borough’s entrepreneurial spirit through these awards.”

Mayor Pipe added: “Last year our judges commented on the extremely high calibre of all the short-listed entries and I’m sure that this year Hackney’s businesses will continue to impress.”

The prestigious judging panel consists of business professionals who all have a connection to Hackney: Sinclair Beecham MBE, co-founder of Pret A Manger and owner of the Hoxton Hotel; Yvonne Thompson CBE, founder of Choice FM; Enzo Testa, Executive Managing Director of Archant London, which owns the Hackney Gazette; and Ian King, Deputy Business Editor of The Times.

There are nine categories:

1. Best New Business
2. Best New Business Idea (14 to 19 years old)
3. Best Green Business
4. Best Leisure or Entertainment Business
5. Best Creative or Media Business
6. Best Social Enterprise
7. Best Business for Disabled People
8. Best Employer
9. Best in the Business

Businesses and individuals must submit entries by 5pm on Friday 23 July. All finalists will be invited to a reception on Tuesday 14 September.
