The newly restored Stoke Newington Town Hall will open its doors to the public with a showcase of events to celebrate its completion.

Running from 27 – 30 January, the ‘Reveal’ showcase features local jazz and acoustic performers alongside an exhibition of local art and photography, health fair and a tea dance for older people.

Local jazz outfit, Blow The Fuse, – which includes Alison Rayner and Deirdre Cartwright of BBC TV series Rock School, is putting on a night of free jazz and soul with and special guests including Sarah P and Anne Day on Friday 29 January, from 8pm to 11pm.

Acclaimed indie folk newcomer Richard Walters is to headline the acoustic evening on Thursday 28 January, supported by Leddra Chapman and Al Lewis. Tickets are £8 and are on sale here.

On Wednesday 27 January, architects Hawkins Brown, who restored the Town Hall are giving a free talk on how they brought the building back to its former glory.

Deputy Mayor of Hackney, Cllr Karen Alcock, said, “Hackney Council is delighted that the restoration of Stoke Newington Town Hall has been successfully completed, bringing back into the heart of the community a well loved and much missed landmark.

“We look forward to welcoming local residents, community groups and visitors to this wonderful venue to enjoy an exciting range of events, to celebrate weddings, birthdays and other milestones, and much more.”

Originally opened in 1937, the art deco building has since survived the Blitz, hosted many operas and classical music performances, as well as enjoying 30 years as a jazz dance hall.

The major restoration project, which began in June 2008, retains the buildings old features – which include a magnificent domed ceiling, vaulted galleries, walnut timber panelling and ornate gold cornicing.

According to Hackney Council, the restoration of Stoke Newington Town Hall, which began in 2008, will provide new space for public use and private hire for weddings, birthdays and other celebrations.

A 25 per cent discount will be offered to Hackney-based community groups offering free community events, and to charities and faith groups holding community events.
