Staff at a Hackney GP surgery are “ecstatic” after winning a highly-regarded NHS Parliamentary Award.

The team at Richmond Road Medical Centre in Dalston took home the national accolade for ‘Excellence in Primary Care and Community Care’ after being put forward by local MP Meg Hillier.

The awards were created as a way of encouraging MPs to highlight innovative and high-quality healthcare across England, and more than half of the country’s parliamentarians nominated a group or individual in 2023.

Richmond Road was praised by a judging panel of 10 healthcare experts for “transforming the practice into a centre of health and wellbeing”.

They said: “Initiatives including yoga, mindfulness, antenatal classes, carers’ support, IT classes and a ‘Winter Wonderland’ have transformed the patient experience and created a real sense of belonging for the community.”

The awards were presented at a special ceremony inside the House of Commons on 5 July – the day of the NHS’s 75th birthday.

Dr Gopal Mehta, a partner at the surgery, said: “Words cannot describe the overwhelming pride I feel for our remarkable team at Richmond Road Medical Centre. Winning this esteemed award is a testament to their unwavering dedication and extraordinary efforts.

“I am truly honoured to work alongside these incredible individuals who have wholeheartedly embraced innovative initiatives, making our practice a true beacon of health and wellbeing, and instilled a sense of belonging in our valued community. Thank you!”

Richmond Road has received frequent recognition in the GP Practice Awards over the past few years, and in 2021 was named ‘Team of the Year’.
