Hackney’s ‘vital’ community halls reopen for the first time since the start of the pandemic

The borough’s 33 council-run community halls have reopened for the first time in 20 months, with local residents and groups now able to book them for events.

The Covid pandemic meant the Town Hall was forced to close the halls to the public in March 2020, but with restrictions having eased, the spaces are opening up again – provided there is good ventilation.

With cases of the virus still prevalent, the council will provide Covid safety information to anyone hiring out a hall to help them minimise the spread.  There will also be extra checks and safety measures when community groups are working with vulnerable adults.

The spaces vary in size, from meeting rooms for 10 people to halls for 150. They are available to rent out seven days a week throughout the year, with most between the hours of 9am and 11pm.

Halls can be hired for parties, wedding receptions, conferences, exhibitions, events such as training courses, and more.

Cllr Clayeon McKenzie, cabinet member for housing services said: “These local venues really bring the community together, as well as providing spaces for fun things like kids’ parties. They also have a vital role in tackling issues including loneliness and obesity – by providing low cost spaces for community groups to run classes.

“It’s great that these community hubs can reopen once more and help bring us back together.

“I also understand that some people might still be worried about catching the coronavirus, and that’s why we are ensuring that the community halls have good ventilation, and Covid-19 safety information is provided to all hirers.

“As a council we are also promoting the coronavirus vaccination to all residents, and reminding people about the importance of regular testing and hands, face, space.”

Private hire rates start at £30 per hour for halls and community hire rates for rooms start at £10 per hour depending on the room size.
