VIDEO: Campaigners on their fight to save the Happy Man Tree

Campaigners fighting to save a 150-year-old tree will appear in court tomorrow after Hackney Council sought an injunction to remove them from the site.

Protesters have been camping in the London Plane tree and more than 22,000 people have signed a petition to save the local landmark.

The tree is earmarked for felling as part of Berkeley Homes’ regeneration of Woodberry Down Estate.

Hackney Mayor Philip Glanville says the removal is necessary to allow for the building of social and affordable housing, and he has highlighted the council’s plans to plant over 35,000 trees by 2022.
