Artist owners of the famous ‘Mole Man’ house in De Beauvoir, have appointed architects to draw up plans to preserve the building.

According to councillors, one of the new owners of the house, Sue Webster, told the De Beauvoir Association she and co-owner Tim Noble intended to “preserve the history of the Mole Man” and planned to “create a basement space” in the area dug out by William Lyttle.

A spokesperson for Ms Webster and Mr Noble declined to comment “as the property is for personal usage, and because we like to keep that private”.

Civil engineer Mr Lyttle famously burrowed a maze of tunnels underneath his home in Mortimer Road in secret over a period of decades, leaving the property dangerously unstable.

His subterranean activities were halted when Hackney Council evicted him for safety reasons.
