Be Unpackaged: zero packaging grocery store opens in Hackney

Unpackaged Shop

A new way to shop: less waste through zero packaging

Grocery shop Unpackaged celebrated its new home on Richmond Road in Hackney with a breakfast launch party last week (Thursday 6 December).

Unpackaged, which first opened in Islington in 2007, has expanded to include a café and bar on the new site.

Hackney based chef Kate de Syllas, who will now run the café, served up tasters of her global cuisine based on local and seasonal ingredients.

Founder Catherine Conway talked about the new model of shop, the move from Islington to Hackney, her partnership with Kate and plans for the future.

The philosophy behind the shop, which opened its doors in Hackney on Tuesday 4 December, is to cut the amount of packaging produce is sold in, encouraging customers to bring their own containers.

To celebrate their new café, Unpackaged will sacrifice its no-packaging principle for the first takeaway coffee drinkers with 1000 biodegradable cups with free coffee voucher, after which it is strictly BYO cup only.

Unpackaged sells organic fruit and vegetables, delicatessen, bakery and store cupboard goods as well as ecological toiletries and gifts, with an emphasis on what is seasonal, fair-trade and local.
