Trash Kit: the art of noise

Trash Kit is Rachel Aggs, Rachel Horwood and Ros Murray, who formed the band in early 2009. Innovative, exciting and enthusiastic, their unique sound is perfectly chaotic and it’s no wonder that they’re taking the music scene by storm.

A cross between African tribal with lashings of a punk storm, it’s probably not the kind of music that you’d show your grandparents. Spontaneous noise somehow comes together in incredible intertwining vocal harmonies; an intense hotpot of sound, the juxtaposition of so many antitheses could easily be terrible, but instead it sounds captivating and raw.

So far, Trash Kit has released a self-titled album in April 2010 to a widely positive reception, and more recently a 7” single in November. Whilst promoting their releases, they got to play at major UK festivals such as All Tomorrow’s Parties, curated by Matt Groening (Simpsons/Futurama), which also had music heavyweights such as Iggy and the Stooges and The XX on the bill. They played many more festivals that summer, including Latitude, Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Summer Sundae and Big Chill. To add to a rapidly increasing list of accolades, they also won the emerging talent award at Camden Crawl.

They praise Hackney for having venues that put on gigs via independent promoters (as opposed to franchises such as Barfly or Carling Academy) which helps smaller bands start out and isn’t just about making revenue. Ros, who lives in Hackney, observes that local promoters use “unusual and interesting space” and that “music and art often go hand in hand, which makes for more interesting approaches.”
