A man arrested for an “appalling and unprovoked assault” on a pregnant woman in Stamford Hill has been admitted to a mental health facility.

The suspect, in his late 50s, was tracked down in Haringey on Monday and detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has now been released under investigation for this offence.

The 20-year-old victim told police she was approached from behind by the suspect, who threw a pillow case over her head before launching an attack on her. She was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville later condemned the assault as “utterly deplorable”.

Hackney’s borough commander Marcus Barnett said: “This was an appalling and unprovoked assault on a young woman.

“I know such assaults are very concerning, but please be assured, whilst such incidents are thankfully rare, they are taken very seriously indeed and my officers do everything they possibly can to bring offenders to justice and keeping you – our community – safe.”

Police and council officers have been conducting patrols in Stamford Hill in an effort to provide reassurance to the local community.
