Philip Glanville pledged to build on Labour’s record

Mayor Philip Glanville has confirmed that he will be standing for re-election in May 2018, with a promise to “build a Hackney that exceeds the rightly high expectations and aspirations of our residents”.

Glanville, who was elected Mayor of Hackney in September 2016 with 69 per cent of the vote, told the Citizen he will be running on a platform of “reducing inequality, creating opportunities for all, and investing in the homes, schools, community centres and parks”.

The Mayor, who will be the Labour Party’s candidate, was cabinet member for housing before he succeeded Jules Pipe, Hackney’s first executive Mayor, in the top job.

In a statement to the Citizen, Mayor Glanville pledged to build on the Labour council’s record on social housing, education and transport, and to campaign against central government austerity and cuts to public services.

Mayor Glanville said: “It’s an honour to be Hackney Labour’s candidate for Mayor in next year’s local elections, and I am privileged to stand alongside an incredibly talented and diverse team of Labour councillors and candidates.

“A little over a year into the job, I am just as passionate and committed to building a Hackney that genuinely works for everyone. We’ve made a great start, but we know there is still much more to do.”

He continued: “Next year’s election will be fought and won on who has the vision and experience to work with Hackney’s diverse communities to deliver a fairer and more sustainable future.

“We are ready to build a Hackney that exceeds the rightly high expectations and aspirations of our residents.

“That means reducing inequality, creating opportunities for all, and investing in the homes, schools, community centres, and parks that we need going into the future.”

The Mayor added: “With over a decade of Labour leadership, Hackney has become an outstanding example of Labour in local government, leading the way in school improvement, delivering council housing and sustainable transport.

“Going into next year’s election I take the responsibility of that example seriously, and will continue to hold the Government to account, campaigning against austerity and the cuts to public services that impact on so many in Hackney.”
