Hackney nightlife will receive a boost as the Night Overground from Dalston Junction launches ten days before Christmas – a move local entertainment venues say will make it “easier, cheaper and faster” to travel to and from Dalston.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan today announced that the 24-hour service from Dalston to New Cross Gate will be running from 15 December.

The “orange line” service will stop at Dalston Junction, Haggerston, Hoxton, Shoreditch High Street, Shadwell, Wapping, Canada Water, Surrey Queys and New Cross Gate, with connections to the 24-hour Jubilee line underground service at Canada Water.

Whitechapel will not be part of the all-night service until Crossrail construction work is completed next summer.

Transport for London said the stations will be staffed the whole time trains are running, and there will be CCTV, modern lighting and help points across the service.

The news was welcomed by local entertainment venues.

Mehmet Ergen, Artistic Director of Arcola Theatre, said: “The Night Overground will make it so much easier, cheaper and faster for our visitors and staff to get to Dalston and home again, as we stay open until 3am on weekends.

She added: “The launch of London Overground night services will enable more people to experience our programme of activities and will help support a responsible approach to the development of the night-time economy.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “The Overground has transformed travel across the capital in the last ten years, opening up areas of London and setting a new standard for quality of service on the rail network.

“We continue to improve the service every year and I’m delighted that we can bring night services to the East London line for the first time ever next month.”

He added: “The Night Tube has proven such a success with Londoners, I know the Night Overground will help thousands more who are working through the night or out enjoying our capital’s nightlife.”
