Samir Jeraj has been selected as the Green Party’s candidate for Hackney mayor in next month’s election.

Mr Jeraj came second in the race to become London Assembly Member for the North East constituency in May.

He was a Green Party councillor in Norwich from 2008 to 2012 and is currently a Policy and Practice Officer at the Race Equality Foundation.

Mayor Jules Pipe resigned as mayor earlier this year to become Sadiq Khan’s deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills.

Mr Jeraj announced his selection yesterday via Twitter.

Congratulations and messages of support were sent out from Green Party social media accounts.

Mr Jeraj is so far running against Hackney’s current Deputy Mayor Philip Glanville (Labour) and the Conservative candidate Amy Gray.

Polling takes place on 15 September.
