Tackling gangs: Three students from Our Lady’s Convent School

A group of students from Our Lady’s Convent School are to hold an event this month to broaden young people’s understanding of gangs.

They are part of Envision, a social action charity empowering young people to take action on the issues they care about.

The students focused their project on gang crime after conducting a survey about what issues were affecting the community and finding that people were most concerned about crime.

Three young women described how they have been affected by gang crime and culture after seeing friends, family and peers get involved.

The students are part of a ‘Community Apprentice’ programme which supports young people to become active in the community while developing valuable life skills.

Envision Project Coordinator Peter Olawaye said: “The Community-Apprentice programme is about supporting young people to take on a neighbourhood problem and come up with an innovative and youth-led solution.”
