Parents petition for better road safety outside Orchard Primary School

A petition to get Hackney Council and Transport for London to invest in adequate road safety measures for children walking to Orchard Primary School will be delivered to a meeting of Hackney councillors on 27 February.

Members of the parent-run fundraising group Friends of Orchard School launched the petition in an effort to ensure children reach the school safely, over what is a notoriously dangerous crossing on Well Street.

A current governor at the school was involved in an accident as a pupil, and the problems have been an ongoing concern.

Over the years, further accidents involving children have occurred and there have been many accounts of near misses.

Chair of Governors at Orchard School, Joanna de Guia, said: “Generations of children and their parents have had to deal with crossing with an incredibly dangerous road to reach school each day.

“Now it’s time for councillors and the mayor to act, to make sure every child at Orchard can get to school safely.”

Agreeing, the Friends of Orchard School have said it is time road safety was improved once and for all, even if it means building a full pedestrian crossing.
