How to recycle your Christmas tree

This year it is super easy to dispose of your Christmas tree responsibly by allowing Hackney Council to compost it and use the compost in the borough’s parks and green spaces.

There are now four different ways you can recycle your tree. If you live in a house on a residential street covered by the council’s Garden Waste Service, you can place your tree at the front of your property on the collection day.

Alternatively, all Hackney residents are entitled to four free bulky items collections per year, and five items can be collected at one time, including Christmas trees.

For those on wheels, there will be a designated skip for Christmas trees at Millfields waste transfer station, Millfields Road, E5 0AR until 31 January. Take your tree there Monday to Friday 8am-3pm, or Saturdays 8am-12noon.

Finally, if you live on the western or eastern fringes of the borough, you can take your tree to one of two recycling centres in adjacent boroughs: 40-42 Hornsey Street, Islington, N7 8HQ, (Tel: 020 7527 2000, Monday to Saturday 8am – 8pm, Sunday 8.30am – 8pm) or South Access Road (via Markhouse Avenue), Waltham Forest, E17 8AX (Tel: 020 8509 3664, Monday to Saturday 8.30am – 5.15.pm)
